Josh Weiss: Conversely, what was the most fun/easiest part about it? Then, after that, it had to be approved by the various producers-and there were many-and many more creative disagreements. Initially, after Holes won the National Book Award and then the Newbury, there was a lot of Hollywood interest in the book. They may have had some say in the editing, but mostly, their role was distribution.
Louis Sachar: Actually, Disney didn't get involved until the film was almost finished shooting. Josh Weiss: When you found out that Disney wanted to turn your book into a movie, what was your initial thought? So when he arrived on the first day of shooting, he really was the "new kid." Jon Voight was there as well and he remained in character around them, so they'd be scared of him. The head stuntman had them digging holes and doing other rigorous exercise to toughen them up.
The teenage boys all came to the set a week before we began shooting. He and I spent an hour discussing Sam's background, coming up with various details, which felt right to both of us. Similarly, Dulé Hill, who played Sam, wanted to know how his character came to the town of Green Lake. Of course, none of that made it into the script, but presumably it helped the actors know who they were.
Pendanski knew him from there, and would occasionally forge phony documents of authentication. Sir ran a fencing operation out of the back of a strip club in Albuquerque.
